As I call a lot abroad I'm using this website a lot.
I changed from BT to virgin 8 months ago or so. The Virgin sales rep told me that the cost for 08.. and 09.. numbers would be the same. However it turned out it's not the same at all when I decided to look it up on the vrigin website, the tariffs were quite well hidden away
I pay at least 50% but in some cases up to 75% more per minute using virgin. So when my years contract is over with Vrigin I will switch back to BT

As you have discovered to your cost VM can charge what they like to call 0844 Numbers, and have done for some time now.
Their is already a few threads on this subject here.

See:

Another alternative is to use a cheap call supplier that offers freephone access  ,or geographical number access if you have inclusive 01/02 minutes, like http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php who offer both.

If you use these methods another advantage is you dont normally pay until connected, unlike 0844 where you start to pay when you here the charging announcement .

You are 100% correct! When your contract is finished with Virgin go back to BT and don't ever leave them again!!! Try dialling 1280 before you dial your overseas numbers....0844 because they get carged to your BT landline account and you pay the price you see instead of the deceitful  overcharged Virgin charges. I am so hacked off with Virgin that I cannot wait for my one years contract to end. They will NEVER get my business again. They are totally deceitful, and when challenged they actually BLAME Nifty list.....can you believe it?? Virgin really needs to get their act together fast.

Oh help! What a mess! The 13 spam posts by ZaraMir remind me of that Pink Floyd Song ("Nobody home"):

You can try dialling 1280 before you dial ANY number and it then goes through BT and is charged at BT rates on your line rental bill even though you are a v/m customer. Virgin have a massive cheek charging a hell of a lot more for these calls and when I threw drama I was told it was "the nifty lists' fault! what rubbish. Happy to say that today my time with v/m finished and I am now a BT customer again and will never leave them again
